A number of private universities have mushroomed in this country over the last decade. Private universities in general have been found to offer better learning infrastructure, teaching methodologies and churn out more industry ready technical graduates. Areas in and around New Delhi, Maharashtra, Bangalore have been some of the prominent regions in the country where a number of private universities catering to engineering, medical and management have come up. In Bengal too a number of private universities have germinated over the last 3-5 years that have served just not the local students but also students from neighboring states like Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha. These universities have also attracted students from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Let’s take a look at some of the modern universities in the state of West Bengal.

Adamas University in Barasat (a place close to Kolkata) is aimed to provide solutions to all education needs under one roof. Making students industry ready is one of the primary objective of the university. A wide range of courses catering to the streams of engineering, science, liberal arts, law and commerce and management are offered over here. Students over here are given the opportunity to opt for combinations of various disciplines like engineering and business administration or any science course with management course.


Agarpara is another area lo cated in the northern fringes of Kolkata and it is here that JIS University exists. It offers courses on law, journalism, media and film, MBA and liberal arts. The university is recognized both by the State government and UGC. Integrated courses are also offered at the undergraduate and po st graduate level. Integrated courses include BA, LLB, MA, LLB, BBA with MBA, BTech with MTech.



Salt Lake area in Kolkata has witnessed the emergence of lot of educational institutions over the years. It is here that the Techno India University has come up and it is found to offer courses in the fields of computer science and engineering, MBA, law, science and computer application and commerce. Integrated courses in B Tech, M tech and PhD in all disciplines of engineering are offered. Wi-fi on campus, food court, parking lot and a playground make up the sprawling university campus. The university targets holistic development of students and hence apart from academics, focus on activities like sports, debates and inter-university competitions are given. There is a central grooming and placement team that enhances the soft skills of students to be better prepared for interviews.


Close to Salt Lake, is an area called New Town and it is here that University of Engineering and Management (UEM) has been established. The courses offered here are B Tech, B Sc, B Com, BA. The B Tech degrees are offered in subjects like electronic engineering and communication, computer science, IT, biotechnology, electrical and electronic engineering. The university has developed modern labs where researchers work and publish their theses. The university is also found to offer courses that are affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology apart from courses offer by UEM.
